Most often, people with immature or severely weakened immune systems become infected with cats, such as infants, the elderly, AIDS patients, those undergoing chemotherapy or those taking immunosuppressive drugs.

Bartonellosis. In this case, the bacteria enter the human body through the cat’s mouth. The first signs of the disease include a red rim of a healed scratch or bite. Later, a fluid bubble forms in the area after a few days, which can crust over or turn into an ulcer. After that, the lymph node closest to the wound becomes inflamed. A person may experience headaches, pain in the joints and muscles, fever, loss of appetite, and constant lethargy. Full recovery from the disease can take several months.

Rabies. It is transmitted by bite, scratch or lick. Infection can occur even if the cat’s saliva gets on the mucous membranes. The disease begins with symptoms of acute respiratory infection, followed by attacks of violence, convulsions and hallucinations. In this case, the virus may not manifest itself at all for several months.

Pasteurellosis. It develops after leaving a scratch or bite. It has several forms. While swelling and suppuration occur on the skin, symptoms such as chronic bronchitis or slow interstitial pneumonia appear in the lungs. The septic form is the most severe. Fever, purulent arthritis or meningitis, endocarditis and brain abscess occur. There is a possibility of infectious-toxic shock.

Tetanus. It is more likely to be transmitted from cats that occasionally wander outside. The disease is transmitted through scratches from soil-contaminated paws. The wound heals very slowly and the person may experience cramps or spasms that prevent them from opening their mouth.
