Turkish state-owned bank Ziraat has stopped opening ruble accounts, but has not explained the reasons for this decision, RIA Novosti reports.

“No, ruble accounts are not currently being opened,” the bank’s branch told the publication.
Citizens of the Russian Federation doing business in Turkey have reported difficulties in opening ruble accounts at this bank. Previously, this could be done without any problems if the client had a residence permit or a document proving the right to work or study in Turkey.
Private banks have said that it is theoretically possible to open ruble accounts, but only if one has a deposit, but state banks are not in agreement with this either. Holders of ruble accounts are offered to convert money into lira and use bank cards to pay for services.
Problems with bank transfers between Russia and Turkey have been going on for months and are probably related to US pressure on Turkey due to the threat of secondary sanctions.
Russia and Turkey may create a mutual payment system due to trade problems. Pressure from US sanctions led to a reduction in exports. This statement was made by the deputy chairman of the Turkish Vatan (Homeland) party, Hakan Topkurulu.
