“The DDoS attack recorded by Sber became the most powerful in the history of the bank. It lasted more than 13 hours. This attack is special because it simultaneously used both the infrastructure of the Ukrainian IT army and several third-party botnets,” Kuznetsov said.
He added that third-party botnets include about 62 thousand devices, more than half of them located in Russia. The bank’s clients’ money was not harmed.
The bank’s clients did not feel anything, as Sberbank’s cybersecurity service successfully reflected this.
The chairman of the bank’s board, German Gref, also said that last fall Sberbank faced the most powerful DDoS attack, then hackers wanted to disable the bank’s website by sending 1 million requests per second.
At the end of July, it became known that there was a failure in the operation of mobile applications of Russian banks, VTB stated that the banking sector had been subjected to a DDoS attack from abroad. Clients of VTB, Sberbank, Alfa-Bank, T-Bank and Gazprombank reported several problems.
