On Saturday, NaNoWriMo released a position paper that neither supports nor condemns the use of AI in writing, arguing that opposing AI tools can amount to “classicism and ableism.” The organization argued that AI tools can ease financial burdens and accommodate different cognitive abilities.

The organization, known for its annual “event,” NaNoWriMo, has previously acknowledged the possibility of using AI but warned against its full use. This year’s announcement expands on that view by emphasizing personal choice when using AI tools and taking community concerns into account.

The response was swift.

Writers and human rights advocates on platforms like X and Reddit have condemned the organization, accusing it of “devaluing human creativity” and “exploiting disabled writers.” Critics, including writer Chuck Wendig, argue that AI tools are “undermining genuine artistic expression” by recycling existing content and effectively “stealing” creative works from their graves.
