Modern cars are packed with a plethora of sensors and sophisticated electronics. How to independently find out what happened in case of an error? Today we will consider a universal multi-brand OBD2 auto scanner with a Bluetooth interface, which is designed to solve this problem.

Introduction
First, a few words about why this device is needed.
The universal scanner plugs into the car’s OBD-2 connector and allows you to quickly diagnose the car if there are any error indicators on the dashboard. The “check engine” error can appear for many reasons. In turn, the scanner will help you determine how serious the problem is. Such a device allows you to save time and money on diagnostics in the service.
More advanced devices like Rokodil ScanX, unlike simple ones, allow you to read (and erase) everything, including resetting errors and/or trouble codes on gasoline or diesel cars.
Another interesting part of the functions of such scanners – real-time display of sensor readings and car engine parameters, you can record and display graphs on the screen of a smartphone / PC.

packaging and equipment
The scanner is supplied in a plastic blister. The packaging design and the body color of the device use green, a hint of crocodile, in keeping with “Rokodil”. Complete set: Rokodil ScanX scanner and user manual in Russian.

The scanner is made in China. 5 year manufacturer’s warranty.
A diagnostic scanner is only a part of the self-diagnostic system, it also needs a screen, a smartphone / tablet or laptop does its job.
The guide provides a list of popular recommended software for Rokodil ScanX:
-
Car Scanner (iOS/Android/Windows)
-
Easy EOBD (Android/Windows)
-
Open diagnostics for Lada (Android)
-
Carista for VAG (Android)
-
Scan Master (Android/Windows)
-
Engine data (Android)
Appearance
The ScanX scanner has a compact size, slightly larger than an OBD-2 port connector. The weight is only 21 G. A rubber pad is added in the plastic case so that the device does not slip in hands. The OBD-2 connector on cars is usually not located in the most accessible place (under the steering column, in the glove box, or under the hood).

There is only one activation button and three LED indicators on the housing (wireless communication / connection to the car bus / power supply).
The internal padding consists of two printed circuit boards installed in a bookcase. On the top Bluetooth board there is a BK3432 chip and an antenna (a track on the board), and on the bottom there is a PIC18F25K80 controller.

Exploitation
We will carry out the main tests on a relatively “new” 16-year-old X-ray Lada. In the car’s OBD-2 keystone connector, ScanX clamps firmly. You can leave the scanner right there, there is a power off button and if you don’t turn it off, on modern cars after ~10 minutes the OBD-2 power goes off after you turn off the ignition.

I tried to install two of the recommended diagnostic programs on my smartphone (first and last on the list, both free). Bluetooth must work on the smartphone, the in-car communication with the scanner is stable.
Car Scanner program with a clear interface and Russian language:

To connect, you must create a car profile. The VIN number is displayed. Errors are read without problems, even reset. About each, by clicking, you can read the description, convenient.

In addition to engine errors, analysis is available on other vehicle systems, such as the ABS unit, automatic transmission, power steering, airbags, etc.
Additional features of this software (in the free version, only a couple of parameters are displayed on the chart):

The Motor Data app seemed a bit clunky, maybe it’s a personal opinion. It requires more initial parameters. In any case, there is a software option.

ScanX was also tested on a Mitsubishi Lancer IX car from the early 2000s. Using the same mobile programs, the same sensor readings and errors are accessed. For amateur diagnostics, it makes no sense to use more sophisticated scanners, you must already have experience as a car mechanic in diagnostics.

conclusion
Rokodil ScanX is a compact and affordable option for vehicle parameter self-diagnosis and error reading. The scanner doesn’t take up a lot of space, but it can be great for helping you along the way. I recommend!
