So far there have been ten species of loaches (genus Sabanejewia) – small bottom freshwater fish living in the basins of the Mediterranean, Baltic, Black, Caspian and Aral seas. The species described by Russian scientists was called the Azov golden pathway (Sabanejewia maeotica Vasil’eva et Vasil’ev). Fish found near the village of Donskoye in the Lipetsk region, unlike the rest of the genus, have a series of relatively large dark spots, between which there is dark pigmentation. Some of these loaches have a uniform dark color on the side.
Previously, these fish were classified as: Sabanejewia ax, because it was assumed that they lived only in the Black Sea and Baltic Seas. The new species is the fruit of long-term isolation, TASS cites the opinion of ichthyologist Ekaterina Vasilyeva. The researchers presented their findings and findings in a paper in the Journal of Ichthyology.
