More than two billion people worldwide eat insects, according to Professor Wilson-Rankin, meaning they are the main source of protein for much of the world.

The most common food people eat is insects, followed by butterflies and moths. This practice is more common in countries closer to the equator.

Grasshoppers, crickets and locusts have the most protein per unit of mass. You’ll also get other nutrients like antioxidants, anti-inflammatories, essential amino acids and fiber.

Insects contain small amounts of mono- and polyunsaturated fats. However, they do contain nutrients that can be obtained from other plant sources but not from other protein or meat sources. These include anti-inflammatory agents and antihypertensive components such as antioxidants.
