Researchers from the Institute of Cytology (INC) RAS have developed a mathematical model to detect defects in the functioning of red blood cells.

With the help of special proteins – ion channels and transporters – sodium, potassium and chloride ions important for the body enter red blood cells. Violation of this process can have a serious negative impact on the functioning of the body.

The system of equations developed by the scientists makes it possible to describe the transport of ions in erythrocytes using a minimal set of experimental data. The researchers were able to find values corresponding to the normal and abnormal transport of potassium, sodium and chloride ions across the membrane of red blood cells.

By changing the coefficients, it is possible to evaluate how these processes affect the functioning of the cell. The model makes it possible to identify the causes of disturbances in ion transport and to predict their further dynamics.

Development has already been used to study the transport of ions during apoptosis, a process of cell death regulated by the body. Valentina, a member of the scientific group, a senior researcher in the Neurodegenerative Diseases Modeling Group of the Institute of Science Center of the Russian Academy of Sciences, additionally emphasized that the studies show that the model can be used to study different types of cells.
