The RC version of iOS 18, now available to developers and public beta participants, extends Activation Lock to critical iPhone components, including batteries, cameras, and displays. This feature ties these components to the owner’s Apple account via their serial numbers. If the replacement part is detected as belonging to a device with Activation Lock or Lost Mode enabled, iPhone will ask for the owner’s passcode before allowing it to be used.
Apple’s move aims to prevent stolen iPhones from being disassembled and sold for parts.
iOS 18 will be released on September 16 and will be compatible with the iPhone XR and later models.
