Researchers analyzed nearly 70,000 AI-related headlines and found that nearly 40% of them “conveyed fear and anxiety,” using terms like “dangerous” and “existential threat.”
The research used tools to examine the emotional tone of headlines and found that the media often amplifies fear of AI through “sensationalism.” Experts say this type of fear-mongering not only “reflects public sentiment,” but also “actively shapes it,” creating a “cycle of escalating anxiety.”
The study authors warn that this trend could have significant societal and political consequences, such as stifling innovation due to overly cautious regulation.
