What is the film about?: the story of a young sailor, Edmond Dantes, who becomes the victim of a conspiracy. The hero is unjustly imprisoned on the island of Chateau d’If. In his natural state, he meets a wise prisoner, an abattoir, who imparts to him knowledge and the secret of the treasure’s location.
After 14 years of captivity, Edmond escapes, finds wealth, and returns under a new name: the Count of Monte Cristo. His goal now is to destroy the lives of those who betrayed his return and justice, which he believes is an act of retribution.
This adaptation is different in that it does not focus solely on Edmond Dantes. Instead, this film offers multiple points of view, including his two allies.
Both characters are not just extras in Dantès’s revenge plot; they have their own personal motivations and grudges against those Edmond is pursuing. This added layer of drama in a subtle film moves it beyond a simple revenge plot. Moreover, this new twist refreshes a well-known story.
Despite its three-hour running time, the film don’t breathe tightly. The energetic script, rich intrigue, costume dramas and free action scenes do not allow you to get bored.

Like a superhero story, Dantes’ journey is one of becoming. At the beginning of the film, we see him as a naive and honest sailor, his ideals struggling against the cruel betrayals of reality.
His imprisonment becomes a symbol of the loss of innocence, and his long years of confinement and training at the abbot are preparation for his transformation into an inexorable avenger. All this is very similar to the famous “Batman Begins”. Here is training, and the acquisition of skills and allies, the creation of a new image and, of course, a plan for revenge, which he proposes with a surgical abyss.

Edmond Dantes believes that it is in the name of justice, but his obsession with revenge destroys him more than anything else. At the end of the film, the question arises: is it worth placing the victims that one has to bear?
Like Bruce Wayne, Edmond Dantes uses his wealth to destroy his enemies, but his obsession with revenge gradually destroys him the most.

The main actor is a great guy
Pierre Niney delivers a brilliant, multi-layered performance in Edmond Dantes’s videos. At the beginning of the film, he charms with his naivety and honesty, but as his character becomes more vengeful and bitter, Niney conveys this transformation beautifully.
His performance is full of internal reflections: hatred and bitterness towards those who betrayed him are intertwined with longing for a lost life and the impossibility of returning to his former ideals.
Anaïs Demoustier achieves a deep emotional impact in Mercedes’ videos, especially when she is confronted with the fact that her former lover has changed beyond recognition. Fascinating.

Visually stunning, the film is a joy to watch.
One of the film’s greatest strengths is its visuals. Drone shots, opulent castles, the latest palaces and natural landscapes create a stunning atmosphere.
The sets and costumes dress the viewer in the Napoleonic era, provided the film is allowed to run. a feeling of amazing truthfulness. It is apparently the most expensive French production of the year, and every euro is visible on screen.
Fencing, shooting, deer hunting – all this requires subtle images with a dynamic that creates an atmosphere of exciting adventure. The film masterfully balances between emotional and dramatic moments.
Jérôme Reboutier’s soundtrack complements the visual splendour, adding drama and emotion at just the right moments.
