People usually take ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) in the form of powder, capsules, tablets, liquid drops, or gummies containing extracts of the plant’s roots. It’s believed to help you relax and fall asleep.
Studies show that this supplement may improve perceived stress and anxiety levels and reduce levels of the stress hormone cortisol compared to a placebo treatment. In one study, people reported a 44% reduction in stress levels after taking ashwagandha for an average of 60 days. Some studies also suggest that it may help people fall asleep a few minutes faster, sleep 25 minutes longer, and toss and turn 12 minutes less when they wake up during the night.
Experts say ashwagandha can be beneficial for those who experience nervousness and anxiety — for example, students who are afraid of exams — and research supports this.
A small group of other studies report benefits of this herb, such as lowering blood sugar levels, improving physical performance and muscle strength, improving cognitive functions (memory, concentration), and increasing testosterone levels, sperm count, and sperm health in men.
However, experts caution that additional research is needed to confirm the beneficial properties of ashwagandha.
