Energy companies are increasing gas-fired power generation to meet rising demand from artificial intelligence data centers, manufacturing facilities and electric vehicles, signaling “a longer-term dependence on fossil fuels,” Bloomberg said.
In the first half of 2024 alone, U.S. companies announced more new gas-fired power plants than in all of 2020, and 2024 is projected to have the highest level of gas-fired generation since at least 2017. The Southeastern United States leads in new gas projects: more than 200 power units with a total capacity of 86 to 100 gigawatts are planned to come online by 2032.
Some experts see it as a step back in reaching the country’s clean energy goals, but others argue that current energy needs do not allow for a rapid transition away from fossil fuels.
