As Jackie Townsend, Roman’s deputy project manager at NASA, explains, the device is more like a house on wheels than a bus because it performs many of the functions that enable the telescope to reach scientific goals in space.

The mission’s main goals include studying dark energy, dark matter, and exoplanets. The spacecraft will not only carry the telescope, but also power it, manage data, and regulate its temperature.

The device’s telecommunications capabilities are impressive: it will transmit 1.4 terabytes of data per day, which is 23 times more than the Hubble telescope.
