Dr. Mopelola Adeyemo, a clinical nutritionist at the University of California, Los Angeles, points out that legumes are unique foods. They are a source of protein and also contain complex carbohydrates. Beans are also considered a vegetable according to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) dietary guidelines.

Luckily, you don’t have to eat a lot of beans to reap their benefits. One of their best qualities is that they’re high in fiber. Just half a cup of black beans will give you 8 grams of fiber, which is about 25% of your daily value.

Beans are an excellent source of plant-based protein. They also contain many important nutrients, including potassium, copper, iron, magnesium, folic acid, and vitamin B6.

According to the doctor, the high fiber content in legumes helps lower blood sugar levels, control weight, prevent constipation and protect against colon cancer. Studies have shown that people who eat beans regularly have lower body weight and smaller waist circumference than those who do not.
