The wealthiest group of US citizens is much smaller than the others, but overall they emit 30 times more. That’s the equivalent of 269 tons of carbon dioxide.
But new research suggests that most of us are unaware of the extent of this inequality. In total, 4,000 people were interviewed in four countries: Denmark, India, Nigeria and the United States.
A carbon footprint is the amount of greenhouse gases an individual produces in their country. The increase in carbon footprint is significantly affected by red meat consumption, heating or cooling the home, and air travel.
