The big controversy is giving rise to an idea that could be picked up by the English Evening Star newspaper, as according to Deadline, the late Brian Sewell, one of the UK’s most cutting and prestigious art critics, could be resurrected thanks to AI.

Sewell, who died in 2015 at age 84, worked in standard for over 30 years and was known for his scathing reviews.

According to Deadline, two sources have said that AI Sewell (the name of the late critic’s chatbot) has been tasked with reviewing the National Gallery’s new Vincent van Gogh exhibition, titled “Van Gogh: Poets and Lovers.”

Known as Britain’s most stylish art critic, he called a Damien Hirst exhibition “disgusting” and said Banksy should have been “degraded at birth”. She once said there had “never been a first-class female artist” and that “only men are capable of aesthetic greatness”.

He was a regular guest on British television, appearing in documentaries such as Brian Sewell’s Grand Tour in 2005, during which he toured Italy for Paramount’s Channel 5.

It is unclear whether Sewell’s family allowed the posthumous use of the critic’s ideas, works and images.

Layoffs due to AI?

Another striking development in light of this information is that in recent weeks the Evening Standard newspaper completed Around 150 layoffs, including 70 editorial positions, as part of the transition to weekly publications.

And this reopens the discussion about the limitations of intellectual property and the use of AI chatbots to create content.

If this trend became popular at all, it would be possible, for example, to put signatures Gabriel Garcia Marquez or Ernest Hemingway in some opinions or articles. What a dilemma.
