Uber Technologies Inc. and China’s WeRide Inc. will offer customers in the United Arab Emirates the opportunity to use robotaxi services, according to a joint statement from the companies.

Uber app users in Abu Dhabi will be able to hail a robotaxi starting in 2024. After requesting a ride through the app, they will be presented with a selection including WeRide autonomous vehicles.

Uber has struck several deals with autonomous vehicle developers, including Waymo (a unit of Alphabet Inc.) and Cruise LLC (a unit of General Motors Co.). The company plans to position itself as a platform for commercializing the technology.

WeRide received the first and only autonomous vehicle license in the UAE in the summer of 2023 and has since operated the largest fleet of robotaxis in the country.

In August 2024, Chinese tech giant Baidu launched more than 500 electric robotaxis on the streets of Wuhan. However, as Bloomberg wrote, autonomous vehicles are too careful, causing traffic jams and irritation among residents. A similar problem has been noticed in the United States, where Waymo and Cruise are testing technologies, the agency said.
