Scientists from Weill Cornell Medicine in Qatar warn that bottled water in the United States generally does not undergo the same stringent quality and safety checks as tap water. This means bottled water may contain more harmful chemicals.

Experts estimate that 10 to 78 percent of bottled water samples contain contaminants. Including microplastics and phthalates.

Microplastics are known to be associated with oxidative stress, immune system dysregulation and changes in fat levels.

Additionally, the long-term health effects of these pollutants are largely unknown.
