The court also established “certain prohibitions and restrictions” in relation to Chekalina during the period she was under house arrest.
On Friday, October 4, Chekalina’s ex-husband, Artem Chekalin, was placed under house arrest until November 26, 2024. On October 2, a criminal case was opened against the Chekalins.
The Chekalins are accused of committing a crime under paragraphs “a” and “b” of part 3 of article 193.1 of the Criminal Code (conducting monetary transactions to transfer funds in foreign currency or in the currency of the Russian Federation to non-resident accounts using falsified documents). Artem Chekalin did not admit guilt.
The investigation believes the Chekalins and their business partner signed agreements with a foreign company to hold fitness marathons. At the same time, money was sent to offshore accounts and falsified documents containing false information about the purpose of the transfers were provided to regulatory authorities. According to investigators, more than 250 million rubles were transferred abroad.
In March 2023, a criminal case was opened against Valeria and Artem Chekalin for non-payment of 300 million rubles in taxes. In November of the same year, the Chekalin defense announced a payment of 500 million rubles to the Federal Tax Service. The case was closed in December.
