The 2024 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine was awarded to American scientists Victor Ambrose and Gary Ravkan for the discovery of microRNA and its role in post-transcriptional gene regulation. This is stated in a press release on the Nobel Committee website.

Researchers have been studying how different types of cells develop. Ambros and Ravkan discovered microRNAs, a new class of small RNA molecules that play a fundamental role in gene regulation, the Nobel Committee reported.
“Their groundbreaking discovery revealed a completely new principle of gene regulation that turns out to be extremely important for multicellular organisms, including humans. <...>. It turned out that microRNAs are of fundamental importance for the development and functioning of organisms,” the press release states.
Ambros, 70, is a professor at the University of Massachusetts. Ravkan, 72, is a professor at Harvard Medical School. The scientists will share 11 million Swedish crowns (about a million dollars) among themselves.
In the coming days, the Nobel Prize will also be awarded to specialists in other fields: on October 8 in physics, on October 9 in chemistry, on October 10 in literature, on October 11 in the Peace Prize and the October 14 in economics. The awards ceremony will take place on December 10 in Stockholm and Oslo.
