The New York Times sued von der Leyen. According to his words, Pfizer CEO Albert Bourla corresponded with the head of the EC before closing the largest EU contract for the supply of coronavirus vaccines: 1.8 billion doses of the drug for a total of 35 billion euros.

The European Commission admitted it discussed contracts with Pfizer via text messages, but refused to reveal the correspondence, claiming it was deleted by mistake. After this, the NYT appealed to the European court.

According to Politico, in December 2023, EU countries threw away 215 million doses of the COVID-19 vaccine purchased from Pfizer at the height of the pandemic, for a total of about €4 billion. Initially, the vaccines were purchased at a rate of about 4 billion euros. three doses per person – Estonia, for example, eliminates 1.1 doses per person, Germany – one dose, the newspaper clarifies.
