DMTEL has published the results of a study that was conducted for the first time on the main pedestrian and bicycle paths of thirty popular parks in Moscow.

It measured Internet quality among the Big Four operators from June 19 to August 21 along a route of about 700 km.

Based on the results of measurements in Moscow parks, DMTEL derived an overall rating of operators in points based on the calculation of such integral assessments of the quality of communication services as availability, reliability and quality of communication.

The highest total integral value was noted in the network MTS. Beeline is inferior to the operator and is in second position. MegaFon occupies third position. T2 closes the fourth.

Distribution of final integral assessments of radio coverage and quality of communication services

Downloading data from the Internet (Downlink)

MTS has the best data download speedsincluding averages and across both the lower (10th percentile) and upper (90th percentile) deciles. In the MTS network, 90% of speeds exceed 10 Mbit/s, and 10% exceed 126 Mbit/s, which makes it the leader in speed among competitors.

Beeline is slightly inferior to MTS, but the results are also good. On its network, 90% of speeds exceed 6 Mbps, and 10% of speeds exceed 123 Mbps.

MegaFon takes third place. On its network, 90% of speeds exceed 5 Mbps, and 10% exceed 118 Mbps.

T2 stands out noticeably among other operators. On its network, 90% of speeds exceed only 2 Mbps, and 10% exceed 83 Mbps.

Distribution of service types and speeds (downlink)

MTS monitors traffic stability on the routewhich allows you to watch videos in HD and Full HD formats and use Internet services almost without interruption. The share of speeds below 4 Mbit/s is about 3%, and the results below 1 Mbit/s are only 0.38%, which indicates a high quality connection.

MegaFon and Beeline also show good results, providing access to HD/Full HD video along most of the route. The share of speeds below 4 Mbit/s is 7% for Beeline and 8% for MegaFon, and rates below 1 Mbit/s do not exceed 2%.

T2 is significantly less stable: the share of speeds below 4 Mbit/s is about 18%, below 1 Mbit/s – about 5%.

Distribution of UHD/Full HD video recording quality forms on YouTube according to test dates

In the MTS and Beeline networks, a share of the time receives video in stable UHD/Full HD formats.. In MegaFon and T2 networks during this period there was a decrease in the share of high-definition video.

In the period from June 19 to August 21, Beeline showed the lowest percentage of unsuccessful sessions when including content on YouTube, HTTP DL and web pages: 2.47%, 1.15% and 2.12%, respectively.

For MTS, these figures are slightly higher – 3.02%, 1.91% and 2.29%, but the results of MegaFon and T2 are significantly better, where the percentage of unsuccessful sessions is 2-4 times higher.

Beeline leads website loading speedCarrying forward the best results across time averages and top deciles. MTS is slightly inferior, but still significantly ahead of MegaFon and T2.

In relation to compliance, applications such as video modification are OTT services that deliver official content through an external platform and do not maintain a connection with the operator. The quality of such services is influenced by many factors: from the content provider to the device manufacturer and the quality of the operator’s network.

LTE technologies and their improvements, frequency aggregation and MIMO technologies, are actively used by all operators. In the MTS network, LTE is used on almost all testing routes (99.75% of the time), while in the MegaFon and T2 networks this figure is lower – 93% and 87%, respectively.

Uploading data to the Internet (Uplink)

MTS shows a decrease in the speed of downloading data to the Internet (HTTP UL)ahead of all competitors. Beeline takes second place, following MTS, but ahead of MegaFon and t2. In t2 the value of this indicator is significantly lower.

At the lower speed limits (10th percentile) of HTTP UL, MTS, Beeline and MegaFon have similar indicators – about 3 Mbit/s, while t2 has only about 1 Mbit/s. At the upper speed limits (90th percentile).

MTS and MegaFon show the best results – 10% of speeds exceed 57 Mbit/s. For Beeline this figure is slightly lower – about 52 Mbit/s, and for t2 it is much lower – about 23 Mbit/s.

All operators except t2 transmit speeds above 1.5 Mbit/s, which is sufficient for video calls and video conferencing in HD format on 95% of the route. T2 has about a quarter of speeds below 1.5 Mbps.

Distribution of service types and speeds

MTS best connection stability – only 1.22% of speeds are below 0.6 Mbit/s. For Beeline this figure is 2.77%, for MegaFon – 2.30%, and for T2 – 4.76%.

Beeline is the leader in the percentage of content download session interruptions (HTTP UL)with an indicator of 0.79%. MTS is slightly inferior with 1.30%, but these results are significantly better than those of MegaFon and T2, where the share of unsuccessful sessions is 5.90% and 5.68%, respectively.

As a result, the quality of the HTTP UL service in the MTS network is 8 points higher compared to Beeline, which ranks second, ahead of MegaFon. t2 occupies fourth position with persistently low performance.

Radio network availability

To assess the availability of the radio network, the radio network availability indicator was used, which reflects the ability to connect to the network.

Beeline demonstrated the greatest availability. MTS takes second position, and MegaFon takes third. t2 quality lags behind and takes fourth place.

What’s the result?

MTS takes first place in the Internet presence quality rating in Moscow parks. MTS shows the best results in terms of data transfer speed (HTTP DL and HTTP UL) and significantly exceeds the capabilities and maximum speed.

Although MTS is slightly inferior to Beeline in terms of the quality of OTT services, successful testing of services and availability, this does not affect the important point, and the company retains its leadership.
