Tesla CEO Elon Musk unveiled a new electric car, the Cybercab, designed to function as a self-driving taxi.
The exterior of the Cybercab resembles a smaller version of the Cybertruck. The car has no steering wheel or pedals, meaning it will require regulatory approvals before going into production. The car’s doors open upward and there is room inside for only two passengers.
There is also no charging connector. Musk said the Cybercab charges using wireless charging. Other technical specifications are still unknown.
Tesla plans to launch its Autopilot in Texas and the state in 2025, and begin production of the Cybercab in 2026-2027. Its price will be less than $30 thousand.
Musk believes that self-driving cars will be 10-20 times safer than human-controlled cars. Trips will also be much cheaper: $0.2 per mile, compared to $1 per mile for regular buses.
Tesla introduced a driverless bus. It seats 20 people, no driver needed.
Tesla presented Cybercab at the Warner Bros. film studio. in California. Cybercab chose many non-public roads for further work. Tesla is believed to have made a detailed map of the film studio ahead of the presentation, but the company says it does not use high-definition maps to power Autopilot. [The Verge]
