In a court document filed Friday, the company said Judge James Donato’s ruling, which goes into effect Nov. 1, could cause significant harm to the Android ecosystem and create “significant safety, security and privacy risks.”
Google, owned by Alphabet, asked Donato to delay implementation of the decision until it appealed. If the judge denies the request, the company plans to appeal to the Ninth U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
The judge’s decision was made Oct. 7 in a lawsuit filed by Fortnite developer Epic Games. The court found that Google illegally monopolized the process of downloading applications to Android devices and paying for in-game transactions. The court ruled that Google must allow users to download alternative app platforms and cannot restrict the use of rival payment methods.
