As a result of a powerful hurricane that hit North Africa on September 29, 2024, causing the worst flooding in decades, a new lake appeared on the site of a long-drying lake in Sebha el-Melah in Algeria. Armon said the lake was formed along the Ugarta ridge and was fed by the drying Oued Saura river running from the southeast.
Images of the lake were obtained by NASA. The photos were taken by the Landsat 9 Earth observation satellite. However, on October 16, the lake was more than 30 percent full and the depth reached 2.2 meters.
According to researchers, the Sahara will allow many more discoveries to be made. This will especially affect a new round of greening because we can expect even more floods due to rising global temperatures.
“The future of the Sahara remains completely uncertain, but we hope that we will eventually be able to understand it better by studying the events that led to the filling of the lakes,” Armon said.
