According to a study published in the journal Science, 71 to 95 million people in the region surrounding the United States may be exposed to PFAS through groundwater. Chemicals can leach into the ground from industrial sites, landfills, and other sources.

The Geological Survey study used a machine learning model to analyze data from more than 1,200 groundwater samples. The result identified areas where PFAS contamination was most likely, especially in states like Florida, California, and Massachusetts.

Measures to protect public health are being developed.
