Indonesia banned the sale of Google Pixel in the country because the American company failed to meet authorities’ requirements to localize the smartphones by at least 40%, TechCrunch reported. Previously, for the same reason, the local government blocked sales of the iPhone 16.

According to the rules, smartphones must consist of at least 40% locally produced components. To resume phone sales, Google must obtain TKDN (Tingkat Komponen Dalam Negeri) certification. To do this, an American company needs to create parts within Indonesia, buy them from local manufacturers, or invest in the country’s economy.
The government added that it would consider deactivating Google Pixels that are sold illegally. However, Indonesian citizens can purchase these smartphones for personal use abroad.
For the same reason, in addition to the non-compliance with investment obligations worth 1.7 trillion rupiah (about 108 million dollars at the exchange rate of the Central Bank on November 1), at the end of October the Indonesian authorities prohibited sales of the iPhone 16. To correct the situation, Apple built four academies for software developers in the country, but invested only 1.5 trillion rupees in them.
Neither Google nor Apple are among Indonesia’s top five smartphone makers, according to data from research firm Counterpoint cited by TechCrunch.
