“It is necessary to clearly understand that continuing to use products from foreign suppliers in any format today poses serious risks. As we remember, Google has already limited the use of SMS confirmation for the creation of new accounts. It is unknown what the next step will be,” said the parliamentarian.
On October 30, Gosuslug users who had a Gmail mailbox attached to their account received notifications asking them to replace their Google email “with any other” to protect their data. According to Nemkin, “giving access to information” on this portal “to those companies that organize their work under the dictates of the American government and, in general, adhere to Russophobic policies is at least illogical.”
The deputy recommended that users transfer “any important account” from Google services to their counterparts and stressed that lately the interest of Russian users in the services of the American company “has decreased significantly.”
“Citizens understand that services like Yandex are much more reliable than Google products and are gradually changing their usage habits,” says Nemkin.
In early September, media reported that an American company had limited the ability of Russians to register new accounts using Russian phone numbers. This information was later confirmed by the Ministry of Digital Development.
Google representatives said on September 27 that they are aware of the problems Russian users are having when registering new accounts and that they are working to fix them. The company added that they intend to maintain access to free services for Russians.
Previously, Yandex announced the number of requests from government agencies for the disclosure of personal data of users. In January-June 2024, this figure amounted to 36.6 thousand, of which the company satisfied more than 29 thousand.
