Publishing house “Prosveshchenie” plans to add a chatbot based on artificial intelligence “Elman” to its Russian textbooks for the 5th grade. Students will be able to ask the bot questions on how to solve problems, and the AI will provide tips but not ready-made answers. While the project is in the pilot phase, its full launch is planned to be held in 2025.
The publisher explained that Elman uses an approach in which the student receives guiding questions and examples to complete assignments independently. If the student answers correctly, the artificial intelligence praises him; supports and motivates to continue if difficulties arise. The developers noted that the assistant does not give ready-made answers, which makes the learning process more meaningful, and the adaptation of the chat to the publisher’s school materials helps to adapt to the specific needs of students.
Experts point out the pros and cons of using artificial intelligence in education. Pavel Terelyansky from Plekhanov Russian University of Economics believes that gadgets increase children’s interest, but there is a risk that artificial intelligence systems will isolate students from teachers and peers. Boris Ilyukhin from RANEPA noted that such technologies require a careful methodological basis and structuring, otherwise they can turn into a “simple search engine” and even create an additional burden for teachers who will have to explain misunderstandings that arise among students.
