We are talking about software that is used to create virtual representations of servers, storage, networks and other physical devices, allowing multiple virtual machines to run simultaneously on a single physical server.
Basis will supply T2 with various virtualization solutions, installation services and technical support for 69 regions where the operator operates, where it has 48 million subscribers. The contract between the companies was concluded for three years. Forbes sources estimated the amount of the transaction between 500 and 800 million rubles, depending on its conditions.
Basis ecosystem solutions will be gradually implemented in the operator’s infrastructure and will replace VMware vSphere Standard software, as well as other foreign developments. In a first stage, the Basis Dynamix software to organize the dynamic infrastructure will be implemented on 700 physical servers, later it is planned to increase its number to four thousand throughout the country.
T2 also began testing Basis Virtual Protect, backup tools for virtual machines and Kubernetes clusters, and other tools in its infrastructure that will ensure the operator’s transition to the Basis ecosystem without stopping business processes.
In March 2022, VMware stopped supporting customers in Russia, and in November of the same year, it liquidated the local legal entity. According to Rusprofile, in 2022 Viemvare Rus LLC’s revenue amounted to 477 million rubles, a decrease of 59.7% compared to 2021, and the net loss was 285 million rubles.
T2 is not the only Russian operator trying to replace imported software. For example, in February 2024, Beeline transferred its cloud service Beeline Cloud to a national platform.
