The US Department of Commerce has sent TSMC a ban on the supply of artificial intelligence chips to China from November 11, a source tells CNBC.

We are talking about chips with a manufacturing process of 7 nm and smaller, designed for AI accelerators and graphics processors.

The ban comes weeks after TSMC notified the Commerce Department that one of its chips was found in Huawei’s artificial intelligence processor. This violation is a US threat against Huawei. How Huawei gained access to TSMC products is unknown.

TSMC has already notified Chinese customers about the new restrictions, which came into effect today. [CNBC]
