Sony has begun developing a portable console that will allow you to play games originally released for PlayStation 5. This was reported by Bloomberg citing sources familiar with the company’s plans. According to them, the device should become a competitor to the Nintendo Switch.

The new console will also allow Sony to compete with similar devices from Xbox, which is also working on prototypes in this area. The Japanese company’s device is still in an early stage of development and could be launched on the market in a few years, while Sony could cancel its launch, the agency’s interlocutors clarified.
Bloomberg writes that the new device is inspired by the PlayStation Portal portable device, launched in 2023 and which offers the launch of PS5 games in streaming mode. Initially, the company planned for PS Portal to be a standalone console, similar to Valve’s Steam Deck.
Sony declined to comment to the agency.
The Japanese company already had portable consoles – PlayStation Portable (PSP) and PS Vita – but the devices were not successful, Bloomberg noted. Its production was discontinued 10 years ago and in 2019, respectively.
