The streaming service has partnered with Sennheiser to bring spatial audio to viewers.
More recently, Netflix has started incorporating cinematic audio into its catalog of streaming shows, giving everyone a great excuse to watch Stranger Things 4 again.
Called AMBEO 2-Channel Spatial Audio, the technology was developed in collaboration with audio specialist Sennheiser and provides a “cinema feel” with directional audio filters, giving listeners a 3D sound experience.
Netflix’s spatial audio has helped bring surround sound to any stereo system for watching a movie or TV series, according to a press release.
Most streamers access content with standard stereo equipment, typically through a mobile device, connected headphones, or a simple home speaker setup; if we want cinema-quality sound, we go to the movies. AMBEO 2-Channel Spatial Audio aims to change that.
As the name suggests, this feature is an immersive 2-channel downmix playback that works as a replacement for stereo audio and provides enhanced sound quality for TVs, stereos, headphones, tablets, or laptops. Netflix is the first streaming service to take advantage of Sennheiser technology, which is enabled by default for some games.
Type “spatial audio” into the Netflix search bar to find TV shows and movies that currently support the update. At the moment, these are Stranger Things, The Witcher, The Adam Project, Raising Dion, Lock and Key, Castlevania, Ghosts of Bly Manor, and the Fear Street trilogy.
