The ruble is weakening sharply due to worsening geopolitical risks and new sanctions against more than 50 Russian banks actively involved in international payments, mainly Gazprombank and its foreign subsidiaries, Finam analyst Maxim Pukhov said.

According to him, the national currency is under pressure from several sides, including the growth of the dollar to annual highs, geopolitical aggravation, as well as the seasonal increase in consumer activity and budget spending.

The current weakening cycle of the ruble may stop next week, as the tax period traditionally begins at the end of the month, when exporters sell foreign currency to make tax payments in rubles, the analyst said.
