A court in Delaware has for the second time canceled the payment of bonuses to Elon Musk in the community for $56 billion.
This decision was originally made in January 2024. In June, Tesla held a second shareholder vote that resulted in bonuses being paid. Before the vote, Musk said he would leave the company if shareholders refused to pay him $56 billion.
However, Judge Katelyn McCormick, who made the first decision, also annulled the results of this vote. The court’s ruling stated that Musk “has no procedural basis to change the consistent decision of the court based on evidence presented after the conclusion of the trial.” The judge called the assertion that shareholders could have reached the outcome of the court decision “dubious for the most part and patently false.”
The judge also awarded $345 million while representing Tesla shareholders who sued to overturn Musk’s bonus. Musk is expected to appeal the decision.
Even without the award, Elon Musk remains the richest person in the world. His fortune is estimated at $353 billion. [The Verge]
