“I firmly believe that Elon will do the right thing and that it would be completely un-American to use political power to the extent that Elon has it to harm its competitors and benefit its own business,” the OpenAI director said.
At the same time, Altman acknowledged that xAI, Musk’s AI startup, is a “serious competitor” to OpenAI and praised the company’s plans to build its own data center in Tennessee.
As Bloomberg notes, Musk and Altman have a strained relationship. The Tesla boss, who was involved in creating OpenAI, previously sued Altman and the company, accusing them of moving away from the nonprofit model and original mission. OpenAI still holds a leading position in the generative AI market, but xAI, which has received billions of dollars from investors, is catching up, the agency writes.
Altman, commenting on Musk’s lawsuit, called the situation “incredibly sad.” “I grew up thinking Elon was a megahero,” the businessman admitted.
Previously, The Wall Street Journal reported that Musk’s rivals fear for the future of his business after the inauguration of Donald Trump, whom the billionaire actively supported. According to the newspaper, several heads of companies that compete with Musk’s projects admitted that they did not want to speak publicly against him so as not to worsen the relationship.
