City police said Thompson, 50, who was planning to attend a company conference, suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the chest. This happened on the morning of December 4 near the Hilton Hotel in Manhattan.
The shooter escaped. Law enforcement authorities believe the attacker’s target was the CEO of UnitedHealthcare, as the attacker arrived at the scene ahead of time to prepare. After the shooting, the senior manager was taken to the hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Thompson became a director of UnitedHealthcare in April 2021, according to information on the company’s website. UnitedHealthcare is part of UnitedHealth Group, which is among the largest Fortune 500 organizations in the United States by revenue. The group, which earned $371 billion in 2023, is in eighth place in the ranking.
