The Wankel engine, last seen in the Mazda MX-30 R-EV sold outside the US, acts as a generator. Unlike traditional rotary engines, it is not connected to wheels. Mazda’s development team, which was revitalized earlier this year, is also exploring the possibility of using carbon-neutral fuel and making the engine comply with legal requirements.
This step was taken after the failure of the same MX-30 in the American market. Sold only in California, this vehicle sold fewer than 600 units before Mazda discontinued it in mid-2023.
The company also hinted at future models such as the Iconic SP concept, which could be equipped with the dual-rotor Wankel system.
