MegaFon will help the climate center of the Sakhalin University University recognize the level of the European Union and the community of greenhouse gases in the coastal zone of Aniva Bay thanks to big data.
The operator and university scientists are implementing a project at a marine carbon test site, where they study the interaction of the soil-water-atmosphere ecosystem and determine natural carbon emissions.
At the test site, MegaFon installed 12 automatic observation posts with solar panels. They equipped sensors to measure carbon dioxide and methane, as well as collect meteorological data. Two hydrological sensors for water level control were also installed.

MegaFon is implementing environmental monitoring developments in dozens of regions of the country and cooperates with many industrial enterprises. On Sakhalin, we are implementing a greenhouse gas project together with the regional Ministry of Ecology and Development. The solution we proposed would allow big data to be used to study natural carbon storage capacity, leading to the development of green climate projects.
— Alexander Kaloshin, Director of the National Projects Department at MegaFon
The online data obtained is used by scientists to analyze Europe and develop recommendations for the carbon balance.

The Sakhalin region is confidently moving towards carbon neutrality using the best available technologies on the island. For several years now, Sakhalin enterprises have been actively working to modernize equipment and introduce more environmentally friendly technologies into production.
At the same time, modern digital solutions make it possible to more accurately assess the current environmental situation in the territory. Our climate experiment has not only scientific, but also educational significance, practical results that we will be able to observe next year.
— Andrey Samatov, Minister of Ecology and Development of the Sakhalin Region
Sakhalin plans to achieve carbon neutrality by the end of 2025.
