Three of this year’s top five neologisms refer to people. “skuf” is a man over 30 who doesn’t take care of himself, “pikmi” is a girl trying to win the approval of the opposite sex and “normis” is an ordinary person, the company said.
Two more words are associated with new phenomena in life. “Doxing” is the search for sensitive data on the Internet, which is then used for blackmail and other selfish purposes, and “doxing” means a tendency towards minimalism, a healthy lifestyle and self-sufficiency. The last word is associated with the name of the South Korean singer, television host and model Chan Won-yeon.
During the study, Yandex analysts studied the queries of anonymous users in searches with the words “what is”, “what is this” and “what does it mean”, and then selected words whose interest had increased at least five times compared to 2023.
The company has compiled a selection of the most popular neologisms every year since 2015. In 2023, the top 5 included the words “split” (divide a payment into several parts), “chinazes” (approval, pleasure), “crept” (funny shoes), “kvadrobika” and “swat” (make a fake call ). For the police, it comes from the abbreviation SWAT (elite law enforcement units in the United States).
