Satellites are part of the “high-speed system”. Although China’s space agency CASC did not provide detailed specifications, the satellites’ description suggests they are intended to test satellite-to-satellite laser communications. The US space service confirmed that the satellites were launched into three different orbits with altitudes ranging from 791 to 1,160 km.
The launch supports China’s plans to build the Guowang and Qianfan satellite constellations, which will use inter-satellite laser communications to improve global coverage and reduce ground station coverage gaps.
