Microsoft Edge uses artificial intelligence to upscale low-quality videos

Microsoft Edge Canary now has Video Super Resolution (VSR), a feature that improves the resolution of low quality videos.. The built-in tool uses artificial intelligence (AI) to improve images so that users have a more comfortable experience while playing videos in the browser.

Microsoft introduced the new feature after noticing that a third of the videos played in Edge were 480p or below. The technology serves to help users who don’t exactly have a good internet network.

Microsoft VSR works on videos that have a maximum resolution of 720p and are greater than 192 pixels in height and width. Also, images cannot be protected by digital rights management technologies (they make frames inaccessible to the browser). The restriction may affect content on streaming platforms that use management to protect copyright.

The video upscaling feature is still experimental. It uses machine learning to improve the resolution of videos by removing blocky compression artifacts on platforms like YouTube. VSR is still in testing and is currently only available to Insiders using the browser.
