The failures are associated with the new version of the Tesla HW4 autonomous computer (AI4.1). The source told the publication that one of the possible reasons is a short circuit in the computer’s low-voltage battery during the camera calibration process.
The short circuit supposedly occurs within the first few hundred miles of driving immediately after purchasing the car. Due to the emergency shutdown of the drone computer, active safety functions, cameras and even GPS navigation and estimation of the approximate travel distance with the available charge stop working in the car.
The problem affects cars from the last few months of production, sources told Electrek.
Two sources told the publication that Tesla is currently experiencing an influx of calls to technical services due to computer glitches, but the company has not yet commented on the issue. According to one of Electrek’s interlocutors, Tesla’s service department was instructed to “minimize any consequences” associated with a computer failure.
It is also unknown if Tesla has contacted the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, since in this case the manufacturer would be forced to recall large numbers of cars.
Among the main options to solve the problem, the company is discussing the complete replacement of the computer, but Tesla engineers are also working on a software patch for the car.
