Mangione is charged with 11 counts, including first-degree murder and murder as an act of terrorism, Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg told reporters. If convicted on all charges, Mangione faces life in prison without the possibility of parole.

“This was a carefully planned, terrifying and targeted killing, designed to shock, attract attention and intimidate. The intent was to instill fear,” Bragg said.

In early December, Mangione was already charged with murder. According to investigators, he shot and killed Thompson on the morning of December 4 near the Hilton Hotel in Manhattan, where the UnitedHealthcare conference was being held.

The search for the criminal lasted five days. Law enforcement officers found and detained Mangione on December 9 after one of the customers identified him at a McDonald’s restaurant in Altoona, Pennsylvania. The city is located approximately 450 km west of New York.

Mangione was found with several fake identification cards and a U.S. passport, a homemade firearm and a three-page handwritten document showing the criminal’s negative attitude toward the U.S. healthcare system, New York Police Commissioner said. York, Jessica Tisch.

Thompson has led UnitedHealthcare since April 2021. The company is part of UnitedHealth Group, which is among the largest Fortune 500 organizations in the United States by revenue. The group, which earned $371 billion in 2023, is in eighth place in the ranking.
