VTB and St. Petersburg Metro has started testing a new fare payment system using biometrics at Gostiny Dvor and Ploshchad Vosstaniya stations. Passengers will only need to look at the turnstile camera to pass. For now, the system can only be used by a limited group (VTB and metro employees), but testing with the participation of ordinary passengers is planned in the future.
The technology uses VisionLabs computer vision algorithms and VTB payment infrastructure. To start using the service, passengers must consent to the processing of biometric data and link a bank card through a special portal. As Igor Ostreyko, head of VTB’s transaction affairs department, noted, the main advantage will be convenience: to pass through the turnstile, it is enough just to look at the terminal; It ensures system security and payment speed.
This biometric technology also protects against fraud attempts. The facial recognition system converts the images into encrypted biometric data that cannot be restored to the original photo of the passenger. It also confirms that there is a live person in front of the camera, thwarting any attempts to use a mask or video.
