Recently in Bulgaria, Dyado Koleda arrived at the Bezmer military airbase on a Su-25 attack plane instead of the traditional sled. Her friend Snezhanka, an analogue of the Snow Maiden, also arrived on an attack plane, and Uncle Koleda’s assistants – gnomes – were delivered by helicopter.
Uncle Koleda has roots in winter folklore characters and represents the personification of winter and cold. Unlike more famous Western counterparts such as Santa Claus, Dyado Koleda retains more traditional features and rituals associated with the winter holidays.
The couple were greeted by dozens of children at the airbase upon arrival. This unusual appearance by Father Frost follows a similar incident in Russia, where he visited reindeer herders on the Yamal Peninsula in an Mi-8 helicopter, where he brought a bag of sweets to the nomads and their families.
