It’s not news that google pushes his serve from Lens to get it used by as many users as possible, and this is also possible because it has long been part of the camera app, but the service is also available in Google Photos, in the Recent screen on Pixel phones, and with the Google Assistant. However, not everyone knows what “Lens” should mean, which is why Google seems to be exploring the possibility of renaming the assistant’s shortcut from “Lens” to “Search this screen”.

The language change was noticed by an enthusiastic Redditor (as explained 9to5Google). The “Search My Screen” shortcut appears much more consistently than the old Lens button, but the experience itself is unchanged. Like the Lens button, the new “Search My Screen” shortcut will still open the usual Lens interface, complete with everything you need, including the option to translate or copy text.

The redesigned button still has the target icon, just without the name of the target itself, the only caveat here seems to be the loss of the “Read” button, which would be a shame.

The Redditor uses a beta version of the Google app (13.33.9.29 to be exact), but newer versions of Google are already available on APK Mirror, indicating that the change comes via an update. A server-side experiment that could be limited to some people or just a few regions cannot be ruled out either, in fact other commenters have stepped in by saying they still have the old Lens experience.
