Apple has said it has no plans to create its own search engine to compete with Google.

The company filed a court filing in which Apple’s Senior Vice President of Internet Services Eddie Cue outlined three reasons why Apple should not expect a Google equivalent:

▶︎ «Apple is growing in other areas. Developing a search engine would require a diversion of both capital and personnel, as building a search engine would cost billions of dollars and take many years.”
▶︎ «Search is rapidly evolving thanks to recent and ongoing developments in artificial intelligence.. This makes it economically dangerous to devote the enormous resources that are required to seek to create a system.”
▶︎ «To create a confidential search engine, you will need to create a platform for selling contextual advertising.which is not Apple’s core business. Apple does not have the number of specialized employees and executives needed to create and operate a search advertising business. While Apple does have some advertising, such as on the App Store platform, search advertising is different and outside of Apple’s purview. Building a search advertising business also must be balanced with Apple’s long-standing commitments to privacy.”

Cue also added that Apple will not develop its search engine if it is banned from entering into a contract with Google.

As such, Apple is seeking to maintain its ongoing development with Google, in which it receives $20 billion annually for installing Google by default on its devices.

At the end of 2025, a trial will begin in the United States that will determine the extent of Google’s restrictions due to its monopoly position. One measure being considered is a no-deal deal similar to the deal with Apple. [9to5Mac]
