Attackers are carrying out a massive collection of identity documents and their corresponding biometric data, researchers at cybersecurity company iProov discovered.

Hackers directly pay users to provide their biometric data, which they then use to bypass Know Your Customer requirements. According to him, financial organizations must establish the identity of the counterparty before conducting a financial transaction.

According to the research team, the attackers mainly operate in the Latin American region, but similar fraudulent schemes have been observed in Eastern Europe.

The company noted that in the near future financial institutions will have to implement a multi-level approach to verifying their customers’ data, as current identity verification methods can be easily falsified.

On Saturday, December 28, the Russian government banned Internet calls to landlines and mobile phones to combat telephone fraud. The corresponding resolution excludes the “license for the transmission of Internet data with overlay of voice information” from the list of licenses for the provision of communications services.
